Approvals are less mysterious than they feel. Lenders and reporting vendors verify a fairly consistent set of things before they say yes, and most denials come down to a handful of empty boxes on this list. Work through it, mark what is missing, and fix the foundation gaps first, because they block everything above them.

What lenders actually score: four signals, identity, reporting accounts, bank behavior, and timing.
The four signals lenders score before they approve you.

Foundation

  • Registered LLC or corporation in good standing
  • Active EIN used for all business accounts
  • Business bank account in the exact legal name
  • Business name identical across state, bank, and bureaus
  • Business address consistent everywhere and not a mismatch
  • Business phone number listed and consistent
  • Professional business email and web presence
  • D-U-N-S number registered with Dun & Bradstreet
  • Any required business licenses in place

Credit profile

  • At least a few tradelines reporting to the business bureaus
  • PAYDEX at or above 80
  • On-time or early payment history with no late marks
  • Low balances relative to available limits
  • A mix of account types as the file matures
  • Several months of reporting activity, not brand new

Timing and risk

  • Few recent inquiries, not a cluster in a short window
  • Applying for products the file actually supports
  • No same-day scattershot applications across many lenders
  • Personal credit in range for products that require a guarantee
  • Revenue and bank activity consistent with the ask
  • No unresolved liens, judgments, or derogatory records

Fix the lowest layer first

A perfect credit profile cannot rescue a mismatched foundation. If your name, address, or phone are inconsistent, fix that before you chase score.

Frequently asked questions

What do lenders check first?

Your foundation. If the business does not look real and consistent across records, many lenders decline before they ever look at a score.

How many of these do I need before applying?

The foundation items are non-negotiable. The credit-profile items build over time. Use the checklist to fix the gaps that are blocking your current layer, then move up.
